On September 29, Huaneng's first "Molten Salt Thermal Storage-based Frequency Regulation and Peak Shaving Safe Heating Comprehensive Improvement Demonstration Project" was successfully commissioned at the Huaneng Haimen Power Plant. This marks the nation's first demonstration project coupling molten salt thermal storage with a million-kilowatt unit, as well as a four-unit coordinated steam-water-electric control for frequency regulation and peak shaving. It represents a significant breakthrough in China's innovation in megawatt-level, 6 kV high-voltage direct-drive molten salt electric heating equipment and the integrated utilization of molten salt electric heating systems across multiple voltage levels. It also achieves the first domestic full localization of molten salt system control (Huaneng Ruiwo) for molten salt equipment.

The project features molten salt electric heating with a power capacity of 60 MW, an energy storage capacity of 120 MWh, and a rated steam production of 90 tons per hour. By utilizing large-scale molten salt thermal storage, it ensures safe and flexible operation of the unit, deep frequency regulation, peak shaving, and efficient and economical external heating. This project fills the technological gap in the South China grid region for molten salt electric heating systems used to assist in coal-fired peak shaving, frequency regulation, and heating support.

After the project is put into operation, it will effectively respond to grid peak shaving, rapid frequency regulation, and industrial steam supply requirements. It will serve as a key demonstration project for the coupling of molten salt across multiple scenarios, offering significant implications for flexible adaptation to new power systems.
